Obituary of John Martin Power
Please share a memory of John to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
John Martin Power passed away peacefully Tuesday morning, January 14, 2025 at Compassionate Care Hospice at St. Clare's Hospital in Denville. He was 87.
Born and raised in Worcester, MA, he was a 1955 graduate of St. John's Catholic High School at Worcester (currently Shrewsbury). He earned his Bachelor's Degree in economics from Holy Cross College, Worcester in 1959.
Following college, Mr. Power joined the United States Navy, where he served as a Naval officer during the blockade in the Cuban Missile Crisis. He later served in the Naval Reserves.
He moved to Manhattan, NY to begin his career in advertising. It was in Southhampton, NY on Labor Day Weekend that John met the love of his life, the former Maureen O'Mara. They married and moved their family to Berkeley Heights, NJ following the birth of their son, John, where they made their home for 43 years. They subsequently relocated to State College, PA, before returning to Red Bank, NJ several years ago.
A media and advertising executive, Mr. Power worked with Vitt Media International in Manhattan, NY before founding Power Media Inc., also of Manhattan, NY where he served for over 30 years.
He was an avid runner and ran many marathons and races, including the New York Marathon, the Newport Marathon, and the Jersey Shore Marathon. He was also a car enthusiast and routinely enjoyed watching the sport or making a visit to a live competition. He was a voracious reader and exercised his passion for the written word through a well-developed interest in American History.
John and Maureen both had a great love for all types of animals and took in many strays over the years.
He was actively involved with "Matthew 25," a housing relief charitable foundation dedicated to providing safe, comfortable and affordable housing for those in need through rehabilitated homes in the Worcester and Boston, Massachusetts area. In 1996, John donated his father's childhood home to the organization in memory of his late parents John A. and Assumpta (Ivory) Power. The house was refurbished by volunteers and completed in 1999.
Mr. Power is survived by his loving wife of 55 years, Maureen (nee O'Mara) Power; a beloved son, John W. Power and his wife, Stephanie of Jersey City; and a sister, Susan Kelly of West Hartford, CT.
Arrangements are private. A memorial funeral mass and celebration of life will be planned in the spring. For those so desiring, memorial gifts can be made to Matthew 25 Foundation, 52 Queen Street, Worcester, MA 01610-1437 (https://matt25.org).
